Programs
Through our free and inclusive programs such as online lessons, interactive platforms, summer programs, and mentorship programs, we aim to ignite a lifelong passion for computer science and engineering. These immersive experiences in supportive environments allow girls to explore unique topics and access learning opportunities outside of school, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment. More information to come! Feel free to contact us if you'd like to get involved, or if you have any suggestions and/or questions.
Summer Programs
Students will receive comprehensive instruction in programming languages such as Scratch and Python. These lessons are carefully crafted to be interactive and hands-on, allowing participants to actively engage with the material and develop practical coding skills. Students learn the fundamentals of programming logic, problem-solving, and algorithm development, laying a strong foundation for their journey in computer science and engineering. Mentors will guide and support the students in lessons and mini-project development, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment. The culmination of the program involves students preparing presentations on mini-projects. Through this process, participants can develop critical thinking and communication skills. The program covers a wide range of topics to provide a diverse learning experience. Students will explore various domains, ranging from mobile app development to artificial intelligence.
Our summer program is designed to introduce young girls to the exciting world of computer science and engineering. The program spans several weeks, offering lessons that cover a range of programming languages and diverse topics within the field.
Hackathons
Hackathons will typically span 1-2 days, with participants forming teams based on areas of interest or skill set, and are presented with a challenge to address. Teams are encouraged to brainstorm ideas, develop plans, and leverage technical skills to create a solution within a timeframe. Throughout the hackathons, mentors and volunteers will be available to provide guidance, support, and technical assistance to the teams. These mentors, often women who have excelled in the field, offer valuable insights, share expertise, and inspire participants to think critically and creatively. Hackathons conclude with a showcase where each team presents their projects to a panel of judges. Awards and recognition are given to outstanding teams; however, the focus is on the process of learning, collaboration, and growth that each participant experiences. Hackathons will provide platforms for girls to express their skills, gain confidence in their abilities, and envision themselves as future leaders in computer science and engineering.
Occasional hackathons hosted provide a unique opportunity for participants to showcase their creativity, problem-solving skills, and collaborative spirit in a dynamic and supportive environment. Teams come together to tackle real-world challenges using coding and technical abilities.
Guest Speakers + Speaker Panels
Guest speaker events and panels are structured as discussions, q&a, and keynote presentations, where speakers (often women), share their personal experiences, expertise, and insights on various aspects of computer science and engineering. These events are designed to inspire, educate, and motivate young girls, offering them valuable perspectives and guidance as they navigate their own journeys in these fields. During discussions, speakers will explore topics such as career pathways, overcoming challenges, the importance of diversity and inclusion, emerging trends, and the future of technology. Speakers will offer unique viewpoints and shed light on the vast opportunities available in these fields. Our organization strives to invite a diverse range of guest speakers who will represent different genders, backgrounds, and career paths to ensure that participants can relate to individuals who reflect their own unique identities and experiences. Through these events, our organization aims to expose young girls to a variety of inspiring role models, break stereotypes, and expand their horizons. Send us an email at shecanshv@gmail.com if you'd like to be a speaker!
Guest speaker events and speaker panels (sometimes part of the summer program) bring together professionals, industry leaders, and inspiring role models from the computer science and engineering fields, providing young girls with the opportunity to learn and interact with successful women who have made significant contributions in their domains.
Coding at Home
Virtual lessons consist of a series of interactive resources and tutorials that cover a range of programming concepts, languages, and projects. Participants can access these resources at their own pace. These modules are designed to be beginner-friendly, providing exercises and examples to reinforce understanding. Topics such as web development and mobile app development will be presented in an engaging manner, using sources such as videos, interactive coding environments, and other sites such as code.org and khanacademy. More information coming soon!
Virtual lessons hosted by SHECAN are designed to provide accessible and engaging learning opportunities for young girls interested in computer science and engineering from the comfort of their own homes. These online resources aim to inspire, educate, and empower girls to develop their skills outside of school.
